The UEFA Executive Committee announced the scheduled venue for the match on December 16, 2024, sparking excitement in the Italian city of Udine. After the successful outing of last year, featuring the Real Madrid vs. Atalanta Super Cup match, many fans are hoping this year’s edition will even offer a better spectacle.

During his reaction to the announcement, FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said, “Udine hosting the UEFA Super Cup is a great success for Italy. We took on the commitment with the Pozzo family, Udinese, the city, and Friuli Venezia Giulia region, which are investing greatly in sporting structures, and we have supported it. I’d like to thank the Ceferin President and our colleagues on the Executive Committee because the European footballing season 2025/26 will commence in Italy in August for the first time in history.”

Some Historical Context

Udine will be the first Italian city to host the UEFA Super Cup since the title has been decided in a single game. The last time Italy hosted the UEFA European Super Cup was in 1998 in Palermo when Juventus beat Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg, having won the first leg by 6-1.

But Udine isn’t entirely new to hosting significant international footballing events. Last October, Udine hosted a Nations League match between Italy and Israel. The match ended 4-1 in favor of the Italian national team. Also, the Stadio Friuli hosted the U19 EUROS final match between Spain and Germany in 2019 which saw Spain emerge winner by 2-1.

Udinese Calcio’s director general Franco Collavino expressed his excitement by re-echoing the past success of the latest UEFA Super Cup location. “After hosting the 2019 Final of the European Under-21 Championship and four Italy matches, the Bluenergy Stadium and Udinese Calcio are proud and honored to host a game that I would call epic.” “It is not just important for sport, but for the city of Udine and the Friuli Venezia Giulia region,” he added.

Udine Reaps the Benefit of Owning an Ultra-Modern Stadium

The debate rages on in Italy about how the governing authorities could speed up the bureaucracy-ridden process of building new football stadiums. Clubs like Inter Milan, AC Milan, AS Roma, and Fiorentina have found their projects ditched by governmental bottlenecks, drawing various conversations around Italy’s football authorities governing style.

But this complex process has managed to pass Udinese Calcio’s stadium building process. Fortunately for the city of Udine, it has begun reaping the benefits pretty soon with UEFA recognition (and by extension the attention of Europe and the footballing world).

Meanwhile, Udinese was named the most sustainable club in Italy and the fourth best in the world in 2023, thanks to a highly efficient management board. Recently, it announced a new name for its stadium, changing from the Dacia Arena to the Bluenergy Stadium as part of a new contract.

Bluenergy Stadium, which was also previously called the Stadio Friuli, was one of the 1990 World Cup venues. However, its name changed to Dacia Arena between 2016 and 2023. After the contract ran out in June 2023, Udinese signed a deal worth 1 million per season for five years. Following the deal, the stadium began installing various elements to make the stadium ecologically sustainable, efforts which are jointly reaping rewards for the club today.

Besides announcing the venue that will see a new UEFA Super Cup winners emerge, UEFA has also assigned the hosting rights for the 2025 Nations League Final Four. Italy or Germany will host the events, depending on who wins their play-off. The tournament, which is set to run from June 4 to June 8, will be split between the Allianz Juventus Stadium and the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino in Turin.

Conclusion

After the Real Madrid UEFA Super Cup match against Atalanta last year, the stage could not be grander for the next event. Fans expect a battle of wits, tactical discipline, and attacking football that excites. Like most one-match deciders at this level, the game’s outcome pretty much hangs on the balance, and we can only wait for who comes top in Udine when summer arrives. We are sure the fans are looking forward to it.
